I will be driving 20 hours to play a fest on Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota, and I'll be spending the week on the reservation as well. If you keep up on current events at all, you know about how difficult the past year has been for the people on the reservation. I won't go into the politics of that right now. I spent time out there and played this fest two years ago, and I am so excited to be going back again. The fest is called Wachinyeya Fest. "Wachinyeya" is the Lakota word for "hope", which is the focus of the event. Wachinyeya Fest exists on the reservation to speak out against destructive behaviors like suicide, self harm & addiction, which is something that I am passionate about and discuss in my songs.
All of this to say, I'm not going to this to market myself to a people that have been through a lot. I don't want to make money off of this. I don't aim to expand my fan base with this trip. I want to go strictly to pour into a community that is dear to my heart. Last time I played the fest, I was able to give away a lot of merch to the young people on the reservation. This year, I am trying to do the same thing. They're more expensive than usual, and here is why: for every shirt that you buy, that will cover the production cost of two t shirts. This way, I will be able to send you a t shirt and also be able to give away my merch freely at the fest. In essence, for each shirt bought, I will also be able give one away to a young person of Standing Rock. I think this will be able to bring even a little bit of joy in itself to the kids there. Please think about doing this if it is something that you care about.
